Here is beautiful Tammy in one of our Otters with Akiuk in the background.  This is the north end of the village.  The houses on the left side of the picture are the last ones.  Our house is the grey building between the two orange ones, above the stern of the kayak.  Notice how most homes have tall antennas on the roof?  Those are for VHF radio, a very common means of communication here, preferred to the phone!  The arrival of the hovercraft, barges, scheduled air service, the mail, basketball and volleyball games, all that stuff is announced via VHF radio.
